Help desk and IT support sound similar but differ in scope, skill, and career path. Understand the distinction so you can aim your CV at the right role.

Help desk and IT support are used almost interchangeably in job postings, yet they describe subtly different work. Understanding the difference helps you target the right openings and present the right experience on your CV.

Help desk is the front line

Help desk roles are user-facing and ticket-driven. The focus is on resolving requests quickly: password resets, software access, login problems, and basic hardware issues. Success is measured by response and resolution time, and the work is often structured around a ticketing system.

IT support goes deeper

IT support usually involves a broader set of responsibilities, including maintaining systems, managing accounts and permissions, troubleshooting network connectivity, and sometimes supporting infrastructure. It tends to demand a stronger technical foundation and more hands-on admin work.

Where the two overlap

  • Both are customer-focused and require clear communication
  • Both use ticketing and documentation practices
  • Both are common entry points into an IT career
  • Many organisations combine the two into one team

In a small company, the same person may be help desk, IT support, and network admin. Read the responsibilities, not just the title.

Which role should you target?

If you are starting out or your strengths are problem-solving and communication, a help desk role is an excellent way to build experience. If you already know networking, systems administration, or scripting, look for support roles that let you use those skills every day and grow into infrastructure.

Match your CV to the opportunity

Because the titles overlap, employers rely on the responsibilities listed. Tailor the skills section of your CV to match the specific duties in each posting rather than using a one-size-fits-all document. Mapping your experience to the role it asks for is the fastest way to get noticed.
